National Electricity Market

The National Electricity Market (NEM) commenced in December 1998 and provides a single uniform marketplace for the trading of wholesale electricity across all Australian states and territories, with the exception of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

The NEM is the world's longest interconnected power system with an end-to-end distance of more than 4000 kilometres. Approximately $12.6 billion of electricity is traded annually in the NEM to meet the demand of almost 10 million end-use consumers. From 1 July 2009, the Australian Energy Market Operator will be the market and system operator of the NEM.
