Protecting underground energy assets and Dial Before You Dig

Last updated: 19 July 2010

In NSW, network operators need to be members of the Dial Before You Dig service. This free national service holds and provides information about the location and type of underground assets, including gas pipes and electricity cables.

Using the Dial Before You Dig service is mandatory before carrying out certain excavation work in NSW. These requirements are set out in changes to the Electricity and Gas Supply Acts and Regulations.

Checking the location of any underground infrastructure before work commences helps to prevent damage and protects the safety of those carrying out excavation work.

Fines and penalties may apply if people are found in breach of these rules.

For more information see:

  • Part 5E of the Electricity Supply Act 1995
  • Part 11A of the Electricity Supply (General) Regulation 2001
  • Part 4A of the Gas Supply Act 1996
  • Part 5A of the Gas Supply (Safety and Network Management) Regulation 2008

The amendments to the legislation make reference to the WorkCover's Guide Work near Underground Assets.

Visit the Dial Before You Dig website for more information or to access the service.
