Significant electricity network incidents

Electricity network operators are required to provide the Department with timely and adequate information regarding certain types of significant events that affect their network. This process occurs under the Significant Electricity Network Incident (SENI) reporting scheme, and the types of incidents required to be reported include:

  • serious electricity network accidents
  • serious electrical accidents
  • actionable safety incidents
  • actionable asset incidents.

A serious electricity network accident is an accident involving the electricity network (including accidents remote from the network but for which the network was responsible) as a consequence of which a person is injured (excluding motor vehicle impacts unless electricity is involved).

A serious electrical accident is an accident involving the electricity network (including accidents remote from the network but for which the network was responsible) in which electricity is involved, and as a consequence of which a person is injured.

An actionable safety incident is an incident involving the electricity network, where there was a significant risk that a person could have been injured.

An actionable asset incident is an incident involving network assets where:

  1. reliability planning standards are not met
  2. major loss of supply
  3. equipment failure is of an unusual nature.
