Electricity supply structures - Corrosion protection
Last updated: 11 Feb 2011
Corrosion Protection Systems are installed to protect metal structures that are in contact with land or water from corrosion. These systems have the potential to cause corrosion to other underground structures in their vicinity. For this reason, the Electricity Supply (Corrosion Protection) Regulation 2008 requires corrosion protection systems (apart from those exempted by Clauses 4 and 5(3) of the Regulation) to be approved and to be operated in accordance with the conditions of approval.
Applications for approval are handled by Industry & Investment NSW - Minerals & Energy Division (formerly by Department of Water & Energy). The current application form for approval is obtainable from the link below. We also maintain and update a public register of all approved Cathodic Protection Systems in New South Wales, and Chair the NSW Electrolysis Committee.

Review of NSW Corrosion Protection Regulation
An issues paper (113kb PDF) was released in July 2010, calling for feedback on the current approach and a range of alternative approaches to identify the most efficient and effective way to manage corrosion protection in NSW. The review was undertaken jointly by the Better Regulation Office and Industry & Investment NSW.
The NSW Government has released the report (191kb PDF) and endorsed its recommendations.
The recommendations will improve the currency of information on the register through new requirements for an annual return submitted by owners and by allowing offences to be more efficiently enforced using penalty notices instead of just prosecution. This will enhance the register's role as a risk management tool for the benefit of business and the community.
The review recommendations will be implemented by Industry & Investment NSW.
