We all depend on electricity, and New South Wales is lucky to have some of the most affordable in the world.
NSW has an excellent reliability rate of 99.97 per cent, and the NSW State Plan target is to increase this to 99.98 per cent by 2016. That means an average of just 105 minutes without electricity over the course of a year.
Electricity in NSW is generated from a wide range of fuel sources, including black coal, natural gas, coal seam methane gas and renewable energy sources such as hydro, wind, biomass and solar.
The NSW State Plan's target is that 20 per cent of electricity consumed in NSW will be from renewable sources by 2020.
The role of Industry & Investment NSW - Minerals & Energy Division is to provide leadership in electricity policy and regulation.
We continue to oversee reforms to the NSW electricity industry.
We support a customer protection regime which ensures that these reforms deliver the benefits of competition to the entire community.
We are also responsible for oversight of the NSW electricity network planning, demand management, quality of supply, reliability and safety within the electricity network industry.
