Energy supplier performance - Retailer of Last Resort arrangements

The NSW Government has established arrangements that are aimed at ensuring NSW energy customers will not lose their supply of energy if a retailer is no longer able to supply its customers. These arrangements are known as Retailer of Last Resort. They are intended to work automatically to allow customers to be supplied by another retailer if this unusual event ever occurs.

The government has designated Retailers of Last Resort for electricity (EnergyAustralia, Integral Energy and Country Energy) and for gas (AGL, Country Energy, Origin Energy and ActewAGL). Each of these Retailers of Last Resort would be responsible for customers in separate geographical areas.

The Retailers of Last Resort arrangements allow Industry & Investment NSW (Minerals & Energy Division) to ensure a smooth transfer of customers by working closely with the designated retailers and the independent market operators for electricity and gas.

Each of the Last Resort retailers has a plan to manage the transfer of customers to them and small customers are supplied at prices regulated by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal. This includes ensuring that customers who are receiving the Pensioner Energy Rebate or the Life Support Rebate will continue be paid these rebates.

Following a Retailer of Last Resort event, each of the designated retailers are required to contact affected customers to explain what has happened and what options the customer has.
